வெறும் பாடங்களை மட்டும் கற்காமல்,
புத்தகம் படித்தலின் அருமையை அவனுக்கு
போதியுங்கள். ஆனாலும் வானத்தில்
சிறகடித்து பறக்கும் பறவையையும்,
ரீங்காரம் இடும் வண்டுகளையும்,
மலைப் பகுதிகள் போர்த்திக்
கொண்டிருக்கும் பசுமையையும்
ரசிக்க கற்றுத்தாருங்கள்.
(He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just and are not true.
But teach him if you can, the wonder of books.
And also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mysterly of
birds in the sky, Bees in the sun and flowers on a green
hillside.)

ஏமாற்றி வெற்றி அடைவதைவிட, மதிப்பிற்குரிய
முறையில் தோல்வி அடைவதை நல்லது என்பதையும்,
அடுத்தவர்கள் தவறு என்று சொன்னாலும், தன்னுடைய
எண்ணங்களின் மீதும், கருத்துகளின் மீதும்
நம்பிக்கை வைக்க கற்றுத்தாருங்கள்.
(In school, teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.
Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells
him he is wrong.)

நல்லவனுக்கு நல்லவனாகவும், பகைவனுக்கு
பகைவனாகவும் இருக்க கற்றுத் தாருங்கள்.
(Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough
with the tough.)

ஆட்டு மந்தைப் போல் கூட்டத்தை தொடரக்கூடாது
என்பதையும் கற்பிக்கவும்.
(Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the bandwagon.)

அனைவரின் கருத்தையும் கேட்கவேண்டும்,
ஆனால் அதில் உண்மையானதை மட்டுமே
தெரிந்து, அறிந்துகொள்ள போதியுங்கள்

but teach him also to filter all he
hears on a screen of truth, and
take only the good that comes through.)

துயரத்தில் சிரிக்கவும், அழுவது
அவமானம் அல்ல என்பதையும்
கற்பியுங்கள்.
(Teach him, if you can, how to laugh
when he is said.....
Teach him there is no shame in tears.)

(வாழ்க்கை எப்போதும் இனிப்பாக இறாது என்பதையும்,
தனது மூளைக்கு விலை பேசினாலும், இதயத்திற்கும்,
மனதிற்கும் விலை பேசிக்கொள்ளக் கூடாது
என்பதையும் கற்பியுங்கள்.)
Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too
much sweetnes.
Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the
highest bidders,
But never to put a price on his heart and soul.

தனக்கு சரியென்று பட்டதை, உலகே
எதிர்த்தாலும் போராடியாவது, தான் கொண்ட
கூற்றில் உறுதியாக இருக்க போதியுங்கள்
(Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob...
And stand and fight if he thinks he is right.)

தீயினில் சுடப்பட்ட இரும்புதான் நல்ல
வடிவம் பெரும் என்பதை உணரச்செய்யுங்கள்.

(Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him,
Because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
Let him have the courage to be impatient.
Let him have the patience to be brave.)

தன் மீது அயறாத நம்பிக்கை
வைக்க கற்பியுங்கள். அப்போதுதான்
மனித இனத்தின்மீது நம்பிக்கை வரும்.
(Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself,
Because then he will have faith in humankind.)

இது ஒரு பெரிய கோரிக்கைதான்.
தங்களால் இயன்றதை செய்யுங்கள்.
ஏனென்றால், இந்தக் குழந்தை
என் மகன்!

(This is a big order, but see what you can do.
